![]() ![]() For this last purpose all of the mine warfare gear was removed in order to make way for a second 40mm gun. They were designed to be used primarily as minesweepers, but could also act a minelayers and were built to be reconfigured as regular patrols boats as need required. ![]() All Type 340 Schutzes had Mercedes Benz diesels, while all Type 341s had Maybach diesels. There were two different versions, Type 340 and Type 341, with the only difference between the two being the type of engines with which they were fitted. In their case, their design came from that of the World War II era raumboot of the Reichkriegsmarine (RKM), but was modernized and updated considerably for use by the West or Federal German Navy (FGN), aka Bundesmarine, of the Cold War era. These wooden-hulled naval small craft were the direct descendants of the wooden-hulled small minesweepers used by just about everybody on both sides during World War II, as wood does not trip modern magnetic naval mines (which are made to be used against steel-hulled vessels). ![]()
